Women, listen up!

The one accessory that you don't leave home without could be covered in harmful bacteria. Meredith Land swabbed several women's purses and found some serious problems.

It's the one accessory women don't leave home without.

But think about it. Where do you toss your purse during the day?

"I don't know, probably on a park bench, a public place."

And where does it end up at night?

Baylor Medical Center/Garland gave us 22 medical swabs and wiped the bottom of women's purses."It's been everywhere. I've had it for years so it's been all over the place. There's no telling what's going to be on it." We also wiped inside. "So are you gonna be surprised if we find some gross bacteria on there? No, i'd be surprised if you didn't."

We did.

The pathology lab at Baylor/Garland confirmed several disgusting discoveries.

Three were growing dangerous pathogens.

On the outside of one purse, staphylococcus aureus. It's known to cause skin infections such as impetigo and folliculitis. It's also the bacteria behind food poisoning and toxic shock syndrome.

But in two other purses, deadly bacteria: e-coli.

How do you ensure your purse is clean and pathogen-free?

  • Wipe it inside and out with anti-bacterial wipes. Dry clean it.
  • Put your purse on the back of a chair or in your lap.
  • Never sit your purse on the kitchen counter or near where food is served.
